Buying a new mattress can be a significant investment. As such, you really want to make sure the mattress you buy is one that you'll find comfortable and enjoyable to sleep on. There are a lot of options out there! Avoiding these common mistakes during the mattress buying process will get you off to a good start.

Mistake #1: Taking too much stock in someone else's mattress recommendation.

If you're talking to a friend or family member and they recommend a certain mattress, you may be tempted to just go out and buy that same mattress. Sometimes, people think that if the person recommending the mattress is about the same weight as them or has similar health issues, they'll like the same mattress. This may be true, but it also may not be true. It's still important to try a mattress someone has recommended to you and make sure you really like it in person.

Mistake #2: Assuming that the firm mattress is the better one.

Mattress companies like to advertise that their mattresses are firm as a selling point. For a lot of people, a firm mattress does tend to be what works best. However, some people prefer softer mattresses. If you try some firm mattresses and they don't feel quite right, you may want to try one that's softer and see how it works for you. Memory foam mattresses also tend to be a good choice for those who find firm mattresses too firm.

Mistake #3: Not trying the mattress for long enough.

When you lie down on a mattress to see if you like it, stay there for more than a few seconds. Almost any mattress will be comfortable for a few seconds. You should really linger for a couple of minutes, try a few different positions, and shift around a little to judge whether a mattress is comfortable. If the sales associate is lingering and seems to want feedback from you sooner than you're able to offer it, don't hesitate to tell them you need a minute more. If they leave you on the mattress and go do something else for a while, you may be better able to focus and judge whether you really do like the mattress you're trying out.

It can take some time to find the perfect mattress. Don't get deterred! Avoid making the mistakes above, and you'll be on the right track.
